The chart listed below will tell you the Stafford loan amounts by student type and year in school. Your award letter will determine how much money you may qualify for through the Stafford loan program. In some cases you may not qualify for the full loan amount available and even if you do, it still may not be enough. In the event that you find yourself needing additional money, you may consider the use of private loans to bridge the gap in your aid needs. In either case, TuitionBids.com can help you secure both federal and private loans. Click here to begin.
Students that are deemed independent have higher loan limits because they are paying for their education without the assistance of their family. Independent students are defined by FAFSA.ED.gov as those who were born before January 1, 1984 for the 2007-08 school year or who are married, have and support a child, will be graduate or professional students, are qualified veterans of the military or active duty military, are orphans or were a ward of the court before age 18, or who have special circumstances that can be documented. Dependent undergraduate students whose parents are denied for the PLUS loan are qualified for an additional unsubsidized Stafford loan.
Beginning July 1st, 2008 (loans disbursed after July 1, 2008), the loan limits have increased to the amounts listed below.
